Giving to the Department of Classical Studies

The enduring contributions of former students, faculty, and friends live on in our student fellowships. Awards vary each year depending on available resources and student needs. Your donation to our fellowship fund makes a real difference in our programs.

John Miles Foley Classical Studies Award

This fellowship honors our friend and longtime colleague John Miles Foley, who passed away from complications of cancer on May 3, 2012. Through his pioneering work in the oral traditions of cultures around the world, John made significant contributions to a wide variety of academic disciplines. He influenced countless other scholars through his own publication and teaching, and promoted the work of others through the centers he established and the journal he founded and edited for over 25 years. John's family has asked that memorial donations go to this fund to support graduate education in Classical Studies and related fields. Donation checks can be made out to the University of Missouri, with notice of the John Miles Foley Classical Studies Award, and mailed to the Department of Classics, 405 Strickland Hall, University of Missouri, Columbia, MO 65211.

Walter Miller Fellowship

This fellowship is named for Professor Walter Miller, an archaeologist and first dean of the university's Graduate School (1910-1930). Awarded through the Graduate School to students who have been accepted into the graduate program in the Department of Classical Studies or the Department of Art History and Archaeology and have exhibited special merit.

Gene Lane Memorial Fund

This fellowship is named for Eugene Lane, a distinguished member of the department for more than 34 years. Gene published widely in the fields of ancient religion, archaeology, and philology, and many former students remember him fondly, especially, from his introductory Greek classes. Gene spoke modern Greek fluently and spent a great deal of time in Greece. In his memory, the department has dedicated a special fund to enable graduate students to study in Greece.

Wakefield Foster Memorial Fund

Wake Foster earned his PhD from the University of Missouri and was just beginning a promising teaching career when he suddenly passed away. He was a brilliant Latinist who specialized in metrics and the oral performance of Latin. In his memory the department has dedicated an undergraduate scholarship fund.

Luitpold and Barbara Wallach Fund

We are delighted to announce a major gift to Department of Classical Studies: a generous bequest from the estate of Charles J. Standish in the amount of $100,000. The donation will establish the "Luitpold and Barbara Wallach Fund." Mr. Standish, a longtime friend of Professor Wallach and her late husband Luitpold, designated the support of faculty research as the fund's primary purpose. It is the largest donation in the long history of the department. Look for further news about research awards generated from the fund and opportunities to grow it further. We are very grateful, and the research fostered by his gift will honor the memory of Mr. Standish.
