I received my BA in Classical Studies and English Literature at the University of Houston, and my MA and PhD in Classical Languages and Literature right here at the University of Missouri. I returned to the department in the fall of 2004.

In addition to teaching courses across the classics curricula, from the large introductory myth course to upper-level courses in Latin and Greek, I also serve as the department’s Director of Undergraduate Studies. I am also the editor of Classical and Modern Literature.

I've recently published a couple of short bits—a brief overview of Apollonius and oral traditional studies (Oral Tradition 18.1 [2003], 52-55) and an entry on Skylla and Charybdis for the Enzyklopädie des Märchens: Handwörterbuch zur historischen und vergleichenden Erzählforschung—as well as a chapter on Claudian in A Companion to Ancient Epic (Blackwell, 2005).

Professor Barnes as Icarus in Auckland, New ZealandCurrent preoccupations include: Apollonius of Rhodes, the reception of epic, the ancient world in the cinema, and all things New Zealand, not least the All Blacks.
